The Indian Ocean islands are particularly vulnerable to infectious diseases with epidemic risks (Zika, Ebola, Chikungunya...). In order to prepare for or prevent them, the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC) is deploying the SEGA “One Health” regional surveillance and monitoring network.
Created with the financial support of the French Development Agency, it is based on a collaboration between the five IOC Member States health services (Madagascar, Mauritius, France - Reunion Island, Seychelles, Union of the Comoros).
Epiconcept provides the network with technical assistance:
- Set-up of the Health Monitoring Unit
- Establishment of the regional network, including the 5 IOC islands
- Epidemiology training courses
- Establishment and coordination of the Indian Ocean Field Epidemiology Training Program
- Evaluation of surveillance systems in member countries
- Capacity building of reference laboratories
- Establishment and/or strengthening of health information systems
- Epidemic investigation
- Implementation of Mobile Health solutions
Among SEGA One Health results:

Networking with regional centres of excellence and international organizations

25 field epidemiologists trained by 2017

A mobile laboratory in partnership with the Pasteur Institute of Madagascar

A molecular biology laboratory in Seychelles

Better equipped surveillance services (computer equipment, Internet connections, vehicles, telecommunication kits) with prepared field teams

An external Chikungunya-Dengue-Zika quality control program for the 5 molecular biology laboratories in the Region
