Training modules 2008

FRENCH

The training and epidemiology departments of EpiConcept organise modules focusing on intervention epidemiology and efficient use of computer tools. Courses are organised at the EpiConcept training centre in Paris or on site in various settings within and beyond the EU.

EpiConcept is a training organisation recognised by the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Professional training In France.

EpiConcept organises training sessions for :

  • The European Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (ECDC) and its European Programme for Intervention Epidemiology Training (EPIET), Stockholm, Sweden.
  • The National Disease Surveillance Centre in Dublin, Ireland.
  • The Field epidemiology programme of Health Canada, Ottawa, Canada.
  • Epicentre, Paris, France
  • Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), Paris, France

With the collaboration of senior European field epidemiologists from public, associative and private sector, EpiConcept proposes several three to five days training sessions in French or in English.

EpiData Initiation level - 3 days: Outbreak investigation

The aim of this course is to use EpiData for entering, documenting and analysing data collected during outbreak investigations. The whole course is based on an outbreak investigation exercise

Topics covered include: Design of a one file questionnaire, data entry checks, data quality control and basic descriptive analysis programming.

Maximum number of participants: 15
Number of facilitators: 1-2
Working language: English or French

EpiData Advanced level - 3 days : Observational study

This course is providing advanced use of EpiData for data entry, data analysis and reporting. The whole course is based on an observational study exercise

Topics covered include: Design of multiple files questionnaire, advanced data entry checks, complex analysis programming and reporting system.

Maximum number of participants : 15
Number of facilitators : 1-2
Working language : English or French

Intervention epidemiology and computer tools for outbreak investigation - 5 days

During this one week training module, participants progress step by step in the various phases of the analysis of an outbreak investigation.

Topics covered: development of data entry screens, data entry, data description (time, place, person) and analysis of cohort and case control studies including stratified analysis.

Software used: Excel, Voozanoo, EpiData, STATA.

Training methods: short presentations and “hands on the computer” exercises (80% of time).

Maximum number of participants: 15
Number of facilitators : 2-3
Working language : English or French

Computer tools for epidemiological surveillance

During this one week training module, participants learn how to describe, analyse and interpret surveillance data. Starting withbasic tools for time, place and persons descriptive analysis participants then approach tools for time series analysis. More advanced GIS components can be added upon request.

Training methods: short presentations and “hands on the computer” exercises (80% of time).

Maximum number of participants : 15
Number of facilitators : 3
Working language : English or French

Advanced methods in intervention epidemiology

During the one week training module participants review basic and more advanced concepts related to analytical epidemiology such as study designs (cohort, traditional case control, case cohort, density case control, case-case, case cross over, etc.), biases, confounding, effect modification, interaction, impact, etc.). The content can be adapted to the background knowledge and experience of participants.

Training methods: using short presentations and case studies based on real field investigations participants work in small groups and discuss operational and methodological issues.

Maximum number of participants : 15
Number of facilitators : 2
Working language : English or French

Logistic regression

During this one week training session participants are presented with the basic concepts of multivariable analysis. Using a practical infectious disease example they develop a multivariable analysis using STATA.

Training methods: short presentations and hand on the computer exercises (80% of time).

Maximum number of participants : 15
Number of facilitators : 2
Working language : English

Scientific writing

During this training session, participants can use their personal data or use documents provided by Epiconcept to develop, step by step, a manuscript for publication.

Maximum number of participants : 10
Number of facilitators : 2
Working language : English or French
